My dog had never been a particularly great guard dog before. But that didn’t deter him from protecting his brood one night, namely, me and my family. It was a hot summer night and despite living in a crime-ridden neighborhood, we left a few windows open because it was just so muggy and hot. The kind of weather that made sleeping impossible. Our AC was out and so we decided to leave a few windows open. Later in the night, a loud clattering clash of noises woke me up. Buddy, our golden retriever, was barking and growling up a storm. I grabbed the bat besides my bed and ran into the living room, just in time to see a masked man leap out the window, Buddy on his tail. Usually a gentle dog who’ll befriend anybody, Buddy was a ferocious beast that night, who saved us from a burglary and, perhaps, worse.
