If you intend to record real ghost footage, there are several options available as far as cameras. If you’re on a budget, just borrow Dad’s camcorder and tape over the family’s vacation to Disneyworld. Trust me, they won’t miss it. If they do, blame it on the dog. But make sure the camera has a night-vision option, or else you’re going to get footage of nothing but darkness with a side of shadows. That’s fine if you’re trying to film a documentary on what the blind see, but not if you want actual evidence of ghosts.
Many ghost hunters like to use mini-DV camcorders, which utilize a viewfinder and small cassettes for recording. These are nice because they are lightweight, portable , and fairly affordable (compared to some other cameras). Also, the viewfinder will allow you to see possible spirits before you hit the record button. A new one of these will probably set you back about five or six hundred dollars, which isn’t much if you compare it to the cost of a house or a brand-new car.
