Not too long ago I noticed a mildew problem in my shower. Or at least that’s what I thought it was. Turns out it was actually mold. So after realizing I didn’t know the difference between the two I looked it up. I discovered that while mold and mildew are both a form of fungi there are a few differences in the two.
Mold grows where moisture surfaces. Of course so does mildew. Molds however are generally blue, black or greenish in color. Mildews are generally white or gray in color and have a fuzzy texture (similar to that of a peach).
And while mildew can cause allergy problems in some people, mold can cause not only allergy problems, but severe illness and even death as well. The symptoms of mold can also be much harsher. For instance, if the stuff is black, it can leave you with a persistent cough that won’t go away, and can cause your lungs to bleed. In little ones it can be fatal and it can be fatal in small pets.
Either way however, it’s best to eliminate a mold and mildew problem as soon as you see it. That way you know you’re living and breathing in a safe environment!
