The key to making the Atkins diet work is to stay away from foods that contain carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are sugars that are made by plants. Using photosynthesis a plant takes energy from the sun and combines carbon dioxide (what we all exhale when we breath) and water to make large molecules. These large molecules are then used as fuel by animals or if there are too many consumed the energy can be stored as fat.
A low carb diet works by limiting the milligrams of carbs that a person eats thus forcing the body to use up its fat stores for energy. Most diets give a person a no carb food list to plan meals off of. This list does not contain sugars and starches.
