Table Lamps Should Have Form And Function

There are many facets that make up a well designed room, some are major pieces that dominate the room and are immediately obvious the moment you walk in. Other, smaller pieces of furniture are less obvious but when combined properly with the larger items serve to complete the design. One of the less obvious groups of furniture items are table lamps.

Table lamps are used in some form in every house, or at least, they should. The obvious reason to place a table lamp in a room is to provide illumination. However, the fact that you can turn them on and they give you a source of light is only one of the reasons that they are effective furniture pieces.

Table lamps are also valuable for adding decorative touches to a room. These types of lamps may generally be referred to as accent table lamps. The material with which they are made can help to highlight a design style, whether it’s a brass table lamp or one made of chrome, a black table lamp or wood with mirrored highlights. Similarly, the style with which the lamp has been designed can help to create an overwhelming confirmation of the theme of the room.

An Eames Era lamp can help to complete a room that has been designed after the retro era and a mission lamp can similarly create the mood of the earlier era. These lamps don’t necessarily have to be showpieces to be effective. They can sit quietly on a sideboard and will merely provide quiet confirmation of the statement that the rest of the furniture is making.

Some of the most striking accent table lamps are those lamps that have been designed to make a statement on their own. Stained glass Tiffany lamps are remarkable examples of some of the finest accent lamps with their striking lamp shades combined with beautifully crafted bases. Lamp shades in the retro era were also some of the most creative accent lamps ever made thanks largely to the experimentation with a range of brand new materials.

You also have the understated types of table lamps that look good without drawing attention to themselves. These sorts of lamps will complement contemporary décor as easily as they will if placed in a traditionally decorated room. The functionality is just as important as the appearance of such a lamp.

It doesn’t matter what you need your table lamps for, they should cover the twin needs of form and functionality to succeed.
