In my research on marijuana addiction, I’ve come across a figure time and time again that strikes me as amazing. This is the little known idea, somewhat speculative, and definitely not conclusively proved by any studies – that roughly 10% of chronic smokers are addicted to marijuana. By chronic, I mean daily usage for over a period of years. This is an observation from drug counselors and therapists, estimating that about 10% of chronic users become addicted. This number is way less than something like cocaine or meth – far more than 10% of daily users become addicted – but it is interesting to note how little attention marijuana addiction gets. This is something noted in Marijuana Addiction Help, a blog that discusses marijuana from different viewpoints, and yet not flat out rejecting marijuana as something bad, despite it being obvious there is addiction potential. It would be nice if Obama would fund some real studies on this without any fanfare, that took a look and made some conclusive results on addiction percentages versus overall usage patterns.
