The first step towards establishing a digital photography business is identifying the scope of the photography business. This will involve deciding what one want to focus in the business. Some of the areas one may want to consider include freelancing for local newspapers or magazines, photographing school sports teams, photographing families, wedding photography or creating virtual photograph albums where one is paid for each click on their photos. One can also choose to set up a business as a real estate photographer, a portrait photographer or a wedding photographer.

The next step involves identifying the primary clientele for their business. This can be through direct mail, internet and email, corporate newsletters, direct marketing or through phone calls. The next step entails developing a business plan, which addresses the cost of the initial investment (equipment, staff and renting the office), competing businesses and identifying a strategy of beating the competition. The uniqueness of the business should be made known to potential clients through brochures, postcards, online portfolios or any of the marketing strategies that one may prefer.

One should also design a business website, where they can display the samples of their work in digital photography. Such websites provide a bio about the photographer and provides a sample of their work. Ideally, the website should have a mailing address whereby, prospective customers can ask questions, inquire about the costs or request for a photography session. The website may also include testimonials from clients the photographer has worked with previously.

The proprietor of the digital photography business can also diversify to websites with different content that may be interested in photography. Such include car websites and real-estate websites. The digital photography entrepreneur can place sample photographs relating to the content of the host websites in order to appeal to the different people who may have an interest in that field.
