Acne (or Acne Vulgaris) is a very common skin condition which affects most people at some time in their life, often during puberty. Follicles become blocked and it is this which causes the acne to form. It is not yet clear why some people suffer from acne and some do not. It is thought to be hereditary to some extent. Changes in the body’s hormones are also believed to affect the outbreak of acne.

Another factor which affects acne is the presence of the bacterium P. acnes in skin pores, and antibiotics are sometimes used as a treatment.

Other factors which can affect acne are believed to be stress, anabolic steroid abuse, certain prescribed medications, skin inflammation, overactive sebaceous glands and exposure to certain chemicals.

Often there is some scarring of the skin as a result of the acne. See the author’s site for information about getting rid of acne scars.
